Brethren,

I first want to commend our brethren who performed the 29th Degree – Scottish Knight of Saint Andrew. The cast was primarily made up of our Knights of Saint Andrew and other Black Hats. It was a beautiful performance. Congratulations go to the Commander of our Knights of Saint Andrew, Brother Bayardo Reyes, 32 and the Degree Director Honorable Brother Harry Ross, 32, KCCH.

Brethren, the Venerable Master has a great educational program planned for our November Lodge of Perfection meeting on Friday, November 18th. A presentation on the Sword of Albert Pike will be given by Illustrious Bother James H. Chuck Morgan, 33 Grand Cross. Illustrious Brother Chuck serves the Supreme Council as the Major Donor Officer in the Southeast region. Illustrious Brother Chuck hales from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Let’s give him a great Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus welcome. Please mark your calendar for this educational event. As this is not a tiled meeting your family and significant other are more than welcome.

IMPORTANTLY, we voted to change our meeting time from 7:30 to 7:00pm. Additionally, we have moved to start of our dinner to 6:00pm instead of 6:30pm.

CONTINUING YOUR MEMBERSHIP

The first is a membership event that includes a live presentation by Illustrious Brother Arturo De Hoyos, 33, Grand Cross, K.Y.C.H. on the history of our Ritual Over the Ages. Topics will center around the Symbolic Lodge Degrees and transition into the Scottish Rite and how these changed through the years.

Additionally, a presentation on membership in our Masonic Fraternity and Appendant Bodies. Topic will center around the three “Rs” – Recruitment, Retention, and Reinstatement. This will be given by Illustrious Dean Alban, 33 Membership Services of the Supreme Council, Southern Masonic Jurisdiction, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite.

Also, there will be a lunch for a fee. Cost and more information to come.

This event will take place on Saturday, February 11, 2023 to be held at Tyrian Lodge No. 111 (home of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Middle Georgia) 650 Tallulah Trail, Warner Robins, Georgia. Event will begin promptly at 10:00am, dress will be business casual.

Importantly, this is open to all Master Masons. Announce this at your Lodge and coordinate carpools to bring along Master Masons that you think will benefit from this very special event. It is a great way to introduce Brethren to the benefits of the Scottish Rite.

The second event that you will not want to miss is “The Grand Masters Reunion”. This will be an Orient wide Reunion. This event is scheduled to be held on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at the Atlanta Masonic Center, 1690 Peachtree St. NW, Atlanta, GA. This will be a one-day Reunion going from 8:00am to approximately 5:00pm. More details are to come, but expect that the Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus will be asked to exemplify one of the Degrees. I ask two things: First, do your best to attend this event, as you will get to see other Valley’s in their exemplification of our cherished Degrees. I guarantee you that you will not be disappointed and that you will learn something new. Secondly, think hard as to who Master Masons would benefit from gaining further light through a membership in the Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus. Let’s focus on bringing a great class to this Orient wide Reunion. We were told that the last time that an Orient Wide Reunion occurred that there were 239 candidates. Let’s make sure that the Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus is overrepresented at this event. We can do it!

CENTINNIAL CELEBRATION

Once again, I want to call for assistance on the 100th Anniversary Committee: Our Chairman, Brother Bayardo Reyes, 32 has outlined an excellent event to be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023. But he needs help in execution of an outstanding event. Please, consider assistance in this once in a Century event. Importantly, we have already gained commitment to attend this event by our Sovereign Grand Commander of the Southern Masonic Jurisdiction, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Illustrious Brother James D. Cole, 33, as well as our Grand Master of Masons in Georgia, Illustrious Brother Michael Kessler, 33, and of course, our Sovereign Grand Inspector General of the Orient of Georgia, Illustrious Brother Ted C. Collins, 33. It should also be an event attended by Scottish Rite Masons from all over our Orient and possibly by those in bordering Orients. If interested, please let us know. Join us for a Centennial Committee. Contact the Valley at 706-322-3091 (leave a message), send an email to our General Secretary, Honorable Brother Roger Buterbaugh, 32, KCCH at colsec@gascottishrite.org, or let us know at our next Lodge of Perfection meeting.

It’s a Wonderful Life

Please consider supporting the Valley by attending one of the four performances of “It’s a Wonderful Life, Radio Play”, to be held on Fridays – December 1, and 9, or Saturdays – December 2 or 10. The performance will occur in the evening: 6:30pm doors will open; 7:30pm play begins, and held on the stage at the Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus. Cost is $20 for adults and $10.00 for children under 12. We also hope to have “Sweet Treats” for low cost prior to the start of the play and at intermission. All proceeds will go to the Valley’s Operations. Please get the word out to family and friends. It will be a great Family event for the Holiday Season.

Importantly, we need help in making sure this event comes off well. Not only does this help with Valley finances, but it also is great public relations to the community. We need people to sell and check in the audience. We need folks to help with the refreshment activity prior to the performances and during intermission. Also, we need help in preparing the refreshments. Please step-up and help us out

TNT Fireworks Sales

Brethren, in order to support the continued operations of the Valley and to build up our building fund, the Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus has been assigned a fireworks booth at the Walmart at 3515 Victory Drive, Columbus. We will need help with set-up after Christmas – possibly on December 26. Then we need help in selling fireworks for New Years from December 27 to December 30th. We will need volunteers for sales and for security during the overnight hours. If you and your family members want to volunteer, please call the Valley office at 706-322-3091, email colsec@gascottishrite.org, or ask anyone at the next Lodge of Perfection Meeting.

Brethren, we have a lot happening in the coming months for everyone. Further light and knowledge events, Orient wide Reunion, fun holiday play and great fundraising and fellowship opportunities for our membership and their families. And to prepare our celebration of the first 100 years of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus. Please consider your participation. It will be worth your while….

Warmest Fraternal Regards, Joe

Dear Brethren of the Valley of Columbus,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Knights of St Andrew who put on the 29th Degree at our last meeting. This is the first time that I have seen this degree performed and I know that it was a first for many other members of the Valley. The degree was well done, and the degree work showed the investment of time each of you spent learning your parts.

In November, we will have nominations and election of officers for 2023 at our meeting. Following this portion, we are pleased to have Illustrious Chuck Morgan, 33 Grand Cross as our guest speaker. Ill. Brother Morgan will be speaking on the Albert Pike’s Sword. This portion of the meeting will be open, and we invite you to bring your family and guests.

In December, The Scottish Rite Little Theater will be performing Joe Landry’s “It’s a Wonderful Life: A live Radio Play”. Show dates are Friday, December 2; Saturday, December 3; Friday, December 9; and Saturday, December 10. Cost: $20.00 Adults; $10.00 Children 12 & Under

Go to Freshtix.com. “Order Tickets; go to Venue, Date, etc., put in “Scottish Rite Little Theater”. This will bring you to dates to buy tickets. Doors open at 6:30; Play starts at 7:30.

Lite sweet refreshments and drinks served up to 5 minutes prior to performance and during intermission. Donations welcome. All proceeds support the Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus.

Our next Scottish Rite meeting is open to the public and will be the installation of Officers. I also understand that Santa will be present, and we will have Holidays with the Kids.

Following Christmas, the Valley has secured a TNT Fireworks stand for New Year’s which will also bring much needed funds into our Valley. We need volunteers for to work at both the play and the fireworks stand. Please let us know how you may be able to assist us to make both fundraising events a success. Any amount of assistance is greatly appreciated.

Brethren,

Our big news is that our Lodge of Perfection meeting times have changed. At the October Lodge of Perfection meeting, the Brethren approved a change to our by-laws - our dinner time is now 6:00 p.m. (instead of 6:30 p.m.) and the Lodge of Perfection will now open at 7:00 p.m. (instead of 7:30 p.m.). Our meeting date remains the same, the third Friday of each month. Only the times have changed.

The Columbus Chapter, Knights of St. Andrew did an excellent job portraying the 29th Degree at our October Lodge of Perfection meeting. If you did not attend, you missed a treat. Join us for our Lodge of Perfection meeting on November 18 when IB Chuck Morgan, 33o, will give a presentation on Albert Pike's sword.

We have three upcoming fund raisers planned. The Scottish Rite Players will present a stage radio show entitled "It's A Wonderful Life" December 2, 3, 9, and 10. It will be held at the Scottish Rite Center; tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children age 12 and under. We are raffling off an Oklahoma Joe grill donated by Char Broil at our Lodge of Perfection meeting on December 16. Tickets are available for you to sell or buy. And finally, we will run a fireworks stand at the Victory Drive Walmart December 26-31. We need Brothers to help work the stand. For more information on any of this, contact me.

And of course, I have to give a reminder about dues. 2023 dues are due before December 31, 2022. Dues remain $150, and you can mail me a check or money order or you can pay me at a Lodge of Perfection meeting. If you want to pay by credit or debit card, go to your account on the Supreme Council web site and pay there. There is no service fee, Supreme Council transfers to us all of your dues.

Short Talks by Joseph Fort Newton

The Secrecy of Masonry

The Secrecy of Masonry

Written by Bro. Carl H. Claudy and published by The Masonic Service Association of the United States in 1924 in the book titled, The Master's Wages

In the ordinary sense of the word, Masonry is NOT a "secret" society! Don't let anyone tell you it is. Secret societies are societies which are secret; that is, which do not acknowledge their existence to the public, or in which men do not acknowledge membership.

Everyone knows of the Masonic Fraternity; its members are proud to be known as Masons. There is nothing secret about the membership list; anyone can ascertain from Grand Lodge records and from printed lodge reports who is and who is not a Mason.

So there is nothing secret about the organization. It possesses and imparts to its members certain information which Masons are required to hold sacred, and thus "secret" from the profane. It is a society which possesses "secrets," but is not itself secret.

The secret organization may be, and often is, at least a potential menace to society; at those times of the world's history when secret societies have done great good, they were a menace to the rotten social organization which brought them forth. In days when the social organization is the best the world has seen, the secret society menaces that which is good, even though its members do not so intend. Thus, the anarchistic societies of the old regime in Russia had only Russia's good at heart, yet their deeds have made the word "anarchy" anathema to all good citizens.

"But why have any secrets at all? If you possess knowledge of value and secrets of power, why not give them to the world? Why make a mystery of them?"

If we only could give them to the world! Masonry wants to tell her knowledge; she is anxious to bring to all men the message which she has. And so fast as they are fitted for it, she does so. No good man and true need be denied the blessings of Masonic knowledge; he need but to ask to receive. But to give it to those who do not want it, or those who are unfit to receive and use it, would be to cheapen it, to make it of no effect, to injure its power for good among others.

The teacher of mathematics is willing and anxious to tell the "secrets" of geometry to any student who wishes to learn. But if a ten-year-old child begs for those "secrets," is the instructor able to convey them? How may a ten-year-old understand that the sum of the squares of the two sides of a right angle triangle is equal to the square of the hypothenuse ? Before he can comprehend, he must know common arithmetic, and understand square and cube root! With the best will in the world to tell, the teacher cannot, because the child cannot understand.

Masonry would like to spread her gentle teachings before all men, but if a man have no love for his fellows in his heart, if he possess not the charitable instinct and the love of God, how shall she make him comprehend what she knows and how she teaches?

The "secrets," so called, of Masonry are few in number and valuable only to her membership. A few modes of recognition, a few solemn promises made by each of us to all of us, a few ways of teaching knowledge which was old when the pyramids were built, and you have encompassed most of the Masonry that may not be told. True, the Order has elaborate ceremonies of initiation, teaching, at times with costume and scenic investiture, just as some churches use low lights, incense, and beautiful music to aid in conveying the religious lessons. The methods are kept from profane knowledge not that their spreading before the world would harm Masonry, but would undermine its power for good.

Men are men the world over. That which is hidden is sought; that which is forbidden is desired; that which is secret is studied; that which is rare is held valuable. We hunt for gold, not common rock; we scale the high mountains and disdain the hill; one by one the scientists dig out of the great unknown the secrets of nature, only to pass to another when this one is found.

Masonry, keeping her teachings for those who seek them; Masonry making it difficult to become of her elect; Masonry, holding herself apart and unostentatious from the world, makes men desire her. What a man desires, that will he have. When he finds that there is one and only one road by which he may win from Masonry those teachings she guards so well, that road will he take. He will be a good man and true, and pay the price of study, application, patient waiting, and don the bonds of fraternity to prove himself fit. And, once he is fit, he becomes the material Masonry wants and she gives him of herself with both hands!

As a young Mason you may be much distressed at finding in a book shop a so-called "expose" of the secrets of Masonry, in which there is much that is correct, even if more that is nonsense. But let not your heart be troubled! You can go to any Masonic library and find dozens of them! They have never done any harm, nor can they do harm; and for just the reasons set forth above. Those who are not fit to receive Masonic teachings are neither interested in these so-called "revelations" nor able to understand them. Good Masonic material will never waste time reading them; such want Masonry at its source. Indeed, were it possible that a complete stenographic report be made of any degree, and published in the newspapers the next morning, few would read it, fewer would understand it. For it would not be Masonry, but merely its husk, its shell.

The real secrets of Masonry are never told, not even from mouth to ear. For the real secret of Masonry is spoken to your heart, and from it to the heart of your brother. Never the language made for tongue may speak it; it is uttered only in the language of the eye, in those manifestations of that love which a man has for his friend, which passeth all other loves, even that of a woman.

Committee Reports

Membership

Brethren,

  • The valley has been busy, trying to keep our members engaged, and continuing to bring more light to our current members, as well to potential candidates. This past month, members of the Knights of Saint Andrew presented the 29th degree, which is something that is not done very often.

  • A Grand Masters reunion will be held on June 3, 2023 at the Valley of Atlanta, this will be a great opportunity for Master Masons; not only to continue their search in more light, but to experience what our fraternity has to offer. A great chance to see the fellowship with Masons from across the state, and also to see why we are the college of Freemasonry, and other benefits they can enjoy, such as a more family oriented environment, more lessons and programs that we offer ( Master Craftsman course, masonic lessons presented in meetings), as well as continuing to serve in the community through charity.

  • It is very important to remember that becoming a part of the Scottish rite is now easier!!! We have an online petition form: https://scottishrite.jotform.com/210254152209040 ( or provided QR code).

Very respectfully,

Richard Luna

Solomon Lodge Number 822, e.V., AF & AM

under the jurisdiction of the

American Canadian Grand Lodge (ACGL)

within the

United Grand Lodge of Germany (VGLvD)

H2O - Do you use water? Of course, we all do! Water is so essential in our daily lives for all the most basic needs like hydration, cooking, and cleaning. But could you imagine having no access to water or having to walk long distances for even a small amount. The people of Umuezeokpala, Nise in Anambra state, Nigeria can because that is their daily situation.

After a full review and research into the initial startup cost and annual maintenance fees by our Charity Committee, Solomon Lodge Nr. 822, e.V. has commissioned a water well project to help the people of Umuezeokpala, Nigeria gain access to safe drinking water that is both sustainable and equitable. According to UNICEF (2021), "Although about 70 per cent of Nigerians are reported to have access to a basic water service, more than half of these water sources are contaminated. And although 73 per cent of the country's population have access to a water source, only nine liters of water on average is available to a Nigerian daily." The village of Umuezeokpala unfortunately has no direct source of water and therefore requires its inhabitants to walk an average of 2 to 3 km per day just to have water for their most basic needs. Furthermore, due to the lack of local access to fresh water, it is not uncommon for children who should be in school to be fetching water for the family.

Through the inspiration and life actions of Brother George David "Dave" Williamson, the Brethren of Solomon Lodge recognize that we as a world community must act. For this reason, we dedicate our water well project to Brother Dave.

Very Worshipful Brother George David Williamson was born on 12 January 1938 in Sullivan, Missouri. On 5 July 2000, at the age of 62, he joined Solomon Lodge in Ludwigsburg, Germany where he was a member until his passing on 27 June 2019. Brother Dave believed that his membership was a spiritual kinship with his fellow Brother to practice charity in word and deed; to forgive and forget the faults of his brethren; to hush the tongues of scandal and innuendo; to care for the crippled, the hungry, and the Sick, and to be fair and just to all mankind. For this reason, his motto and theme in 2003 was "FORWARD THROUGH BROTHERLY LOVE".

In a 6 September 2003 speech before the Lodge, Brother Dave is quoted saying, "We must practice brotherly love not only with our brothers, but with our friends, neighbors and with strangers. Those persons that witness our acts of brotherly love might be impressed and may even ask, why you are so caring or why you are so helpful" You may ask, what is this Brotherly Love? According to Brother Dave, "It is being considerate of others, respecting their beliefs, forgiving faults that others may have, accepting the fact that others may have a different opinion than yours, not holding a grudge against another, and working together in harmony." He closes this address with a few words saying, "Let us all make an effort to see that Brotherly Love does prevail in Solomon and that it comes from the heart so as to lead us forward in the future."

In his honor, let's make the future of Umuezeokpala, Nigeria and its surrounding villages a little better. We ask for your help in making this dream a reality through your most gracious charitable donations in support of such a worthy cause.
