Brethren,
Our Valley has been very busy preparing for our Spring Reunion, and many of our Brothers have been rehearsing their parts in the degree work at night and on weekends. The stage, sound, and floor crews have set up for each degree and worked alongside the cast to give everyone the support needed to make this a memorable event for the Class. It is like observing an industrious beehive, abuzz with worker bees dedicated to a single task.
Taken from Morals and Dogma, my most favored Masonic reference book, in the 17th Degree, “Knight of the Sun, or Prince Adept,” after a period of mourning about the Autumnal Equinox, it is followed by the joy of the return of Spring—a feeling that is described as “almost universal.”
Each of God’s creatures reacts differently to a change in their environment—whether it be from fear, hunger, or the seasons—and by instinct, they act accordingly. But man was given the will to decide. Observing a bird nesting in my yard recently, I watched as a neighbor’s cat approached, only to have the mother bird fly down and attack the predator, risking her life to protect her nest. That unselfish act reminded me that we, as Masons, are continually giving our time—that precious, limited commodity which we possess, cannot replace, and which will end at some point in time—and, as “the wisest of us know not when.”
We presently have 14 candidates for our 2025 Spring Reunion, to be held this Friday and Saturday, May 16–17. Our work is rewarded as we welcome and congratulate these initiates as they become Masters of the Royal Secret.
Thank you all for your hard work and dedication to the Scottish Rite and the Valley of Columbus.
Warmest Fraternal Regards,

Greetings Brethren,
GRAND HIGH PRIEST
I write this with a deep sense of honor and a deep feeling of humility, as I was elected and installed as the 156Th Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Georgia at the 203rd Grand Convocation on May 2-3, 2025.
I want to provide you with a simple word, a word that endures, a word that transcends boundaries, and a word that has the power to ignite movements. This simple yet powerful word is my theme for the year: “BELIEVE”. This simple yet profound term resonates in our souls, challenging us to look within, seeking faith in something greater than ourselves, in our shared journey as Scottish Rite Masons, and even in the strength we hold deep inside.
First, BELIEVE in GOD - THE SUPREME HIGH PRIEST OF HEAVEN AND EARTH. In these uncertain times, when the weight of the world often presses down on our shoulders, we must turn our gaze upwards. Believing in God is to embrace a force that nurtures hope in the darkest hours and offers a light that guides us on our most daunting paths. It’s in the stillness of prayer, in the rustle of leaves outside, in that brief moment of serenity after chaos, that we find reassurance.
When we believe, we cultivate a relationship rooted in trust and love. We open our hearts to the possibility of grace, allowing our faith to fuel our actions—actions that can inspire and uplift others. In every challenge we face, let us remember, we are not alone. We are swept forward by a divine belief that propels us into greatness, basking in the wisdom of the ages, navigating with a compass only faith provides.
Next, BELIEVE in our CRAFT—BELIEVE in the craft, not just in the specifics of code or statutes, but in the broad, inclusive sense. Together, as one collective spirit, we are bound not merely by our written tenets and code but by a common aspiration to foster connection across the vast seas of humanity. Brotherhood lives not only in moments of celebration but, also, in our shared struggles and triumphs.
Let us celebrate the CRAFT we forge through kindness, compassion, and solidarity. Letting each other know that, against adversities of the external kind, we support each other. To connect and uplift one another, to believe that together, we can thrive, even when the road is rough. The bonds we share find strength in mutual belief, and that belief creates a tapestry of hope and purpose. When we believe in our shared cause, the possible becomes tangible, and dreams shift into reality. Let us take to heart scripture from our sacred book: “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”
Lastly, I urge you to BELIEVE in YOURSELVES. Each of us has within a reservoir of potential waiting to be unleashed. Far too often, we tend to doubt our abilities, focusing on shortcomings instead of our unique gifts. But just as a pearl is formed from grit, we too must understand that adversity shapes us into who we are meant to be.
BELIEVE that your voice matters, that your vision can spark change, and that one bold step forward has the power to inspire legions. You carry the courage, ambition, and creativity to leave an indelible mark upon this world—a world waiting deeply for your contributions. Your journey is singular, but your impact can be universal.
As we weave together the threads of belief in GOD, in the CRAFT, and in OURSELVES, we create a tapestry that can withstand life's challenges. When you stand before the mirror, embrace every facet of who you are; believe that through faith and community, you are part of something grander.
So, let's proclaim together, with hearts wide open: I “BELIEVE”. I believe in divine purpose. I believe in the ties that bind us, and I believe in the boundless potential that lies within each and every one of us. Together, let us carry this ember of belief forward, lighting the way for both ourselves and the generations that follow.
Finally, I leave with you this charge…
Walk uprightly in your several stations before God and Man
Be men of integrity of good character, to be Honest and Truthful, to be Men of Honor and Duty, to be Men of compassion and kindness, and of love and humility. For what does the Lord require – But to Act Justly, Love Mercy and walk Humbly with your God…
BELIEVE!
SPRING REUNION
We will hold our Spring Reunion on Friday and Saturday, May 16 and 17, 2025. If you know of a Master Mason who would benefit from the Degrees and activities of the Scottish Rite, we will still be taking petitions up to Friday, May 16th.
We currently have twelve petitions, and eleven of those brethren will be participating in the Reunion.
Additionally, if you are interested in participating in one or more of the Degrees, please contact our Degree Director, Honorable Brother Rossie Ross 32° KCCH, or the General Secretary. There are many speaking and non-speaking parts in each of our beautiful Degrees.
2025 DUES
We currently have 17 Brothers who have not paid their 2025 dues. Additionally, we have 25 Brothers who are in arrears for two or more years. The Personal Representative has issued a program to those in arrears for more than two years, that we will make them whole if they pay $150.00. If you are one of those who still need to pay your dues, you can pay your dues via debit or credit card on the Supreme Council’s website (scottishrite.org) or the Valley’s website (scottishritecolsga.com) or send in a check to:
Scottish Rite Center of Columbus
P. O. Box 727
Columbus, GA 31902-0727
Dues are the lifeblood of the Valley. They provide the funding so that we can continue to provide a satisfying Scottish Rite experience to our membership. If you have difficulty in paying the dues, please, please contact me and I will set up a plan for payment with you. Call the office and leave me a message to call you back (706-322-3091) or send me an email: colsec@gascottishrite.org
DINNER RESERVATIONS
Brethren, it is very important that you make dinner reservations for our Lodge of Perfection meetings. We are a relatively small Valley and need to look at all costs associated with the running of the Valley. Reservations help the Kitchen team to better plan. So, please submit your reservations either by phone to the Valley office at 706-322-3091 or by email at colsec@gascottishrite.org. Remember: A reservation made is a reservation paid.
OUR NEXT MEETING
Our next Lodge of Perfection meeting will take place on Friday, June 20, 2025. Dinner will be offered at 6:00 pm, and our Lodge of Perfection will open at 7:00 pm. We will be conducting our Cap & Ring Ceremony for our new Masters of the Royal Secret, and will be presenting three scholarship checks to worthy students. Please bring your lady and enjoy fellowship with your Brethren and their families. Please call the office at 706-322-3091 and make dinner reservations.

Dear Brethren,
On 26 April 2025, the Annual Communication of the American Canadian Grand Lodge convened with renewed purpose, vision, and unity. The highlight of the event was the election of new leadership for the Masonic Year: Most Worshipful Brother Arda Çilingir, 32º, was elected Grand Master; Right Worshipful Brother Tarik Eker, 32º, was elected Deputy Grand Master; and Right Worshipful Brother Cameron J. Davis, 32º, KCCH, was elected Grand Secretary. Very Worshipful Brother Frank Ullman, 32º, was appointed Grand Chaplain.
This Annual Communication was infused with a palpable sense of direction and momentum. A focus on unification, strategic planning, and a clearly articulated mission and vision set the tone for the year ahead. Elected and appointed officers, alongside committee members, departed with a firm understanding of their responsibilities, role-based duties, and the expectation of accountability—signaling that modernization and innovation are not just aspirations but imminent realities.
A significant milestone was the IT Committee’s announcement of the newest addition to the Grand Lodge infrastructure: the AI Assistant Grand Secretary, an exciting leap into the future of Masonic administration. In another historic move, the Grand Master established a committee to lay the groundwork for the formation of the first Bethel of Job’s Daughters under the ACGL. This committee is combined and will work closely with DeMolay Deutschland, fostering collaboration between Masonic youth organizations within our jurisdiction and strengthening our commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders.
MW Brother Arda also introduced his selected charity for the Masonic Year: the Umut Dalı Projesi (“Branch of Hope Project”), a remarkable initiative dedicated to providing education, care, and hope to disadvantaged children and families. It is a cause that embodies the very essence of Masonic charity and compassion. I encourage all Brethren to learn more and support this important effort by visiting our charity page: Branch of Hope Project. The Grand Master’s motto, “Upholding Traditions; Strengthening Brotherhood,” truly captures the heart of our Craft’s enduring values while embracing forward-thinking leadership.
Following the ACGL Annual Communication, MW Brother Arda, MW Brother Tayfun Çilingir, PGM, 32º, RW Brother Tarik, and I traveled to Istanbul, Türkiye to attend the Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Türkiye. The gathering brought together nearly 900 Brethren and over 90 Grand Lodge delegates from around the world, a testament to the global brotherhood of Freemasonry.
Istanbul, with its breathtaking blend of history and modernity, welcomed us with open arms. As the only city in the world that spans two continents—Europe and Asia—Istanbul stands as a living testament to unity through diversity. Wandering through its ancient streets, standing in awe of majestic mosques, and enjoying the warmth of Turkish hospitality reminded me that Freemasonry, like this timeless city, bridges cultures, faiths, and traditions in harmony. The event culminated in a gala that was truly fit for royalty—an evening filled with elegance, music, and heartfelt fellowship.
Adding to the significance of the occasion, the gala took place on my birthday. Surrounded by distinguished Brethren and gracious Ladies, celebrating in a city as magnificent as Istanbul, I could not have asked for a more memorable and meaningful way to mark the day. It was a poignant reminder that Freemasonry is indeed the greatest organization—a sanctuary where men from every corner of the globe, regardless of nationality, race, or creed, can come together in friendship, harmony, and brotherly love, transcending borders and building bridges that endure.
As we embark on this new Masonic year, may we continue to uphold the traditions that define us, strengthen the bonds that unite us, and work together to leave a lasting legacy for the generations to come.
Curiosity as a Guide – The Significance of Curiosity in Freemasonry
by Arda Çilingir, 32°, Grand Master, American Canadian Grand Lodge. Digitally published on 15 May 2025Curiosity is one of the most enduring and defining traits of the human spirit. It compels individuals to move beyond the surface of things, to question appearances, and to seek what lies beneath. Far from being a trivial or passing impulse, curiosity reflects a deeper hunger – not merely for information, but for understanding, meaning, and purpose.
In the tradition of Freemasonry, curiosity holds a place of profound significance. It is not viewed as a distraction, but as a vital force – a spiritual energy that initiates the journey and sustains it. The Craft does not offer ready-made answers to satisfy idle questioning; instead, it honors curiosity as a sacred beginning. It is the key that opens symbolic doors, the motive power that turns ritual into revelation.
Freemasonry invites those who wonder – not in haste, but in humility. As Plato observed, "Philosophy begins in wonder." So too does the Masonic path, which begins with silent questions rather than proclamations. These quiet inquiries form the first steps toward inner transformation and a lifelong engagement with symbols, allegories, and the deeper meanings they conceal.
This article explores the role of curiosity within Freemasonry – from the initial stirrings that lead one to seek admission, through the inner work of the initiated life, to the shared sense of inquiry that binds the Brotherhood. At every stage, curiosity is not a problem to be solved, but a virtue to be cultivated – a steady light guiding the seeker inward, ever deeper, toward truth.
Author's Introduction: Curiosity – that quiet, inner call that urges us to leave well-trodden paths and step into the unknown – is one of the deepest stirrings of the human soul. It arises from a mind that is not content with the visible but longs to look behind the veils of the world. In Freemasonry, curiosity is not a fleeting impulse but a key – it opens doors that are only accessible to those willing to ask, without expecting immediate answers. It is the beginning of a journey inward – and remains its faithful compan...
"Philosophy begins in wonder." – Plato
1. Curiosity as a Starting Point – The Quiet Questions of the Heart The first steps toward Freemasonry are not marked by loud proclamations but by silent thoughts. A gentle amazement causes a man to pause amidst the noise of everyday life. Something within him begins to ask: Is there more than what is seen? This is not mere thirst for knowledge. It is a longing for depth, for meaning – and it leads a man to the threshold of a symbolic temple.
“Curiosity always comes first in the process of solving any problem.” – Galileo Galilei
This curiosity is not a hunger for information but a thirst for truth. It is the quiet force that leads a man to the threshold of a symbolic temple – not as a spectator, but as a seeker moved by an inner need.
2. The Initiatory Journey – The Transformation of Curiosity The curiosity that brings one to the gates of Freemasonry is raw and unrefined – powerful, yet without form. But once the door opens, a transformation begins: outward search becomes inward exploration. Freemasonry does not provide ready-made answers; it invites the initiate to become the book himself.
“Know thyself – and you will know the universe and the gods.” – Inscription at the Temple of Apollo at Delphi
The symbols, rituals, and allegories are not final truths, but mirrors. They ask us to turn inward, to explore the depths of the self.
“Initiation means making oneself the tool of understanding.” – Rudolf Steiner
3. Inner Work – Curiosity as a Lifelong Companion The Masonic journey is not a straight path to a goal, but a circle – an ever-deepening return to familiar symbols and insights. Curiosity remains, but it is no longer impatient; it becomes a flame of silent perseverance. In it lives the desire to refine, not to dominate; to understand, not to conclude.
“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
Freemasonry demands inner labor – the chiseling of the rough stone that is the self. Curiosity becomes the chisel that opens new layers of being, again and again.
4. Curiosity in the Brotherhood – From the Self to the Collective In Lodge, the individual meets others who are also seekers. It is not knowledge that unites them, but shared wonder. Curiosity becomes a moral stance – a space of listening, respect, and understanding.
“Brotherhood is the lived interest in the other – and the desire to understand him in his essence.” – Albert Pike
The Lodge is a space of lived philosophy: where questions matter more than answers, and silence can speak louder than speech. Curiosity becomes a form of reverence – a quiet attentiveness toward both the mystery of life and the dignity of others.
Conclusion: Curiosity as Inner Light The curiosity that leads a man to Freemasonry is not a destination but a beginning. And yet, it never ceases.
“The path to truth leads through silent contemplation.” – Karl Christian Friedrich Krause
It becomes a virtue – a still, steady light that illuminates not outward conquests but inward refinement. Within Freemasonry, curiosity finds its true home – not as an answer, but as a way of being.
The Valley of Columbus is establishing a paver garden in front of the Scottish Rite Center. It will start at the bottom of the steps on both sides of the front porch and extend to the end of each side of the building. It will be similar to the pavers at the Masonic Children's Home in Macon. This is a great opportunity to support the Valley of Columbus Building Fund by purchasing a paver, and to honor those people or organizations that have a special meaning to you (to include yourself!). Complete the order form in this issues of The Ashlar or open in a new window HERE.
300th Anniversary Coin commemorating the first constituted Grand Lodge from 1717-2017. 1 oz .999 Fine Silver Masonic coin. [One side stamped with Square and Compass and Genesis 1-3. Other Side with Appendant Bodies of masonry and coin sequence Number]. Each are serial number stamped 1-150. Can ask for specific number and availability but requires coordination with Bayardo Reyes at colsm@gascottishrite.org.
As a result of our Power of 3 Program plan to raise $3M in 3 years to provide low- or no-cost intervention to help Georgia children with communication disorders find their ‘voice,’ I asked Ryan Gilliam, the Chief Operating Officer of KNR Therapy, how potential RiteCare donations could be used by KNR Therapy at the Autism Learning Center in Columbus. Below is his response:
“Thank you for considering us for your continued generous support. Below, I have provided detailed information regarding our staff, client numbers, the impact of various donation amounts, and our future growth plans.
Current and Projected Staff and Client Numbers:
Current Clients: 60
Current RBTs (Registered Behavior Technicians): 35
Current BCBAs (Board Certified Behavior Analysts): 7
Projected Numbers in the Next Few Months:
Clients: 71
RBTs: 50
BCBAs: 15
Impact of Donation Amounts:
$20,000 Donation: This would cover advanced training materials for staff development or specialized toys/equipment for client therapy, allowing more clients to have PECS communication tools and resources.
$50,000 Donation: Could fund technology upgrades (like tablets for interactive learning) or support a series of parent training workshops, providing essential learning materials or therapy tools for all KNR clients.
$100,000 Donation: This would significantly contribute towards advanced therapy equipment or furnishing a therapy room (sensory room) to enhance the therapeutic environment. We have a room in the clinic that needs a shower and plumbing removed to repurpose the space for our clients.
Potential Funding Utilization Ideas:
Supporting Columbus State University's ABA Program: Establishing a chair at Columbus State University to develop an ABA program aligns perfectly with our mission to grow the BCBA population. This initiative will benefit our clinic and the wider community by increasing the availability of qualified professionals.
Funding for LAMP Devices: Providing funds for Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP) devices would directly enhance our ability to offer high-quality therapy to children with communication challenges.
We are committed to using donated funds to make the most significant possible impact on our clients and staff. We appreciate your interest in supporting KNR Therapy. Thank you for your consideration and support.”
I believe the biggest impact that increased RiteCare donations can have is to help get more BCBAs and RBTs certified. There is no shortage of children who need help. Let’s make it happen!
